What is augmented coding?
Augmented coding is Kent Beck’s name, in use from April 2025, for programming with an AI “genie” while still caring about the code, its complexity and its tests. On 25 June 2025 he set it against vibe coding, where only the behaviour of the system matters: augmented coding keeps the values of hand coding, tidy code that works, and only the typing changes.
Origin Kent Beck used “augmented coding” as early as 18 April 2025 (opens in a new tab), as his own name for the vibe coding he had been doing, and defined it against vibe coding in “Augmented Coding: Beyond the Vibes” (opens in a new tab) on 25 June 2025.

Why it matters.
Beck’s version is concrete enough to copy. His prompt tells the AI “genie” to find the next unmarked test in plan.md, implement that test, then write only enough code to make it pass, while he watches for loops, functionality he did not ask for, and any sign the genie is “cheating, for example by disabling or deleting tests”. Our reading: the check is one test per step, which suits one developer in one session, while agentic engineering applies the same quality bar to delegated tasks and parallel agents.
Augmented coding vs vibe coding
Beck sets the two against each other on one question: whether you still care about the code.
| Criterion | Vibe coding | Augmented coding |
|---|---|---|
| What it names | A practice: prompt, glance at the result, accept it | A personal practice: the AI types most of the code and you hold it to a standard |
| Who writes the code | The model | The “genie”, one test at a time |
| Who checks it | Nobody reads the diff; the human watches behaviour | The programmer, through tests, coverage and design, with a hand ready to stop the genie |
| What stops the loop | “It mostly works” | The tests pass and the code is tidy |
| Where the name came from | Andrej Karpathy, X post, 2 Feb 2025 | Kent Beck: earliest use found 18 Apr 2025; defined against vibe coding 25 Jun 2025 |
| Where it breaks | When the software is for other people: Willison calls it “grossly irresponsible” there (6 May 2026) | When the genie goes wrong: Beck watches for loops, features he did not ask for, and disabled or deleted tests |
Augmented coding vs AI-augmented development
Two different things share a word: Kent Beck’s practice from 2025 and Gartner’s category from 2023.
| Criterion | Augmented coding (Beck) | AI-augmented development (Gartner) |
|---|---|---|
| Kind of thing | A personal practice for working with an AI “genie” | An analyst category of AI tools for designing, coding and testing |
| Named by, and when | Kent Beck: earliest use found 18 Apr 2025 | Gartner, Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2024, press release of 16 Oct 2023 |
| In its own words | “you care about the code, its complexity, the tests, & their coverage” | “the use of AI technologies, such as GenAI and machine learning, to aid software engineers in designing, coding and testing applications” |
| Relation to vibe coding | Defined against it on 25 Jun 2025 | Predates the term vibe coding (2 Feb 2025) |
Questions about augmented coding.
How is augmented coding different from vibe coding?
Kent Beck drew the line on 25 June 2025: “In vibe coding you don’t care about the code, just the behavior of the system.” In augmented coding, he wrote, “you care about the code, its complexity, the tests, & their coverage.” An AI writes most of the code in both; the difference is whether the programmer still holds it to a standard.
Who coined augmented coding?
The earliest use found is Kent Beck’s newsletter post of 18 April 2025, where he wrote: “I have been doing a lot of vibe coding (which I call ‘augmented coding’ for reasons that will become clear)”. Hacker News story titles from late 2024 show similar phrases such as “AI-augmented coding”, so no single coiner can be named. On 25 June 2025 Beck wrote that he had realised augmented coding was different from vibe coding.
Is augmented coding the same as AI-augmented development?
No, they are separate names with separate origins. AI-augmented development is Gartner’s category, defined in its press release of 16 October 2023 as “the use of AI technologies, such as GenAI and machine learning, to aid software engineers in designing, coding and testing applications”. Augmented coding is Kent Beck’s personal practice from 2025, defined against vibe coding.
