What is AI-driven development?

AI-driven development is a generic phrase for software work that AI leads rather than assists. It has no coiner and no canonical definition; its strongest anchor is AWS’s AI-Driven Development Lifecycle of 31 July 2025, which sets AI-assisted and AI-autonomous development against a third way. The phrase says who leads, not who checks, so it cannot tell disciplined AI-led work from vibe coding.

Origin No one is credited with coining the phrase: its strongest anchor is the AWS post “AI-Driven Development Life Cycle: Reimagining Software Engineering” (opens in a new tab) of 31 July 2025, and McKinsey wrote of “AI-driven software development” in “Unlocking the value of AI in software development” (opens in a new tab) on 3 November 2025.

Why it matters.

A vendor deck that promises "AI-driven development" tells you who leads, not who checks. AWS gives the phrase a spine: it names AI-assisted development, where "AI enhances specific tasks", and AI-autonomous development, where AI generates "entire applications without human intervention", and presents its own method as a third way in which AI "defers critical decisions to humans". McKinsey adds a measurement warning: "Avoid weak proxies like the percentage of code generated by AI, which offer little insight into real productivity."

AI-driven development vs vibe coding

No source contrasts the two directly: “AI-driven” says who leads, and vibe coding says whether anyone reads.

AI-driven development set against vibe coding in Karpathy’s original sense: what each names, who writes and checks the code, what stops the loop, where the name came from and where it breaks.
QuestionVibe codingAI-driven development
What it names A way of working: accept what the model writes without reading the diff Who leads: AI, with humans approving. A generic phrase, not a method
Who writes the code The model AI, in the lead
Who checks it Nobody reads the diff; the human watches the behaviour The phrase does not say; in AWS’s AI-DLC, humans validate each stage
What stops the loop The app appears to work Not defined by the phrase; in AI-DLC, a human approval gate after each stage
Where the name came from Andrej Karpathy, post on X, 2 February 2025 No coiner; AWS’s “AI-Driven Development Lifecycle”, 31 July 2025
Where it breaks Beyond throwaway work, nothing replaces the reader A team can be AI-driven and careless, and the word cannot tell a CTO which

The AI-DLC cells follow the AWS post of 31 July 2025 and this site’s framework comparison. The last row is this site’s reading, because no source contrasts the two. Source: Vibe coding vs agentic engineering: 21 terms compared, 2026-10-10.

AWS’s three-way split: assisted, autonomous and AI-driven

The only three-way taxonomy the research found: AWS names two approaches and offers its own as the third.

AWS’s description of AI-assisted development, AI-autonomous development and its AI-Driven Development Lifecycle, quoted from the post of 31 July 2025.
ApproachWhat AWS says it isWhere the human is
AI-assisted development “AI enhances specific tasks like documentation, code completion, and testing” Leads the work; AI helps with tasks
AI-autonomous development “AI is expected to generate entire applications without human intervention based on user requirements” Absent: “without human intervention”
AI-driven (AWS’s AI-DLC) “AI systematically creates detailed work plans, actively seeks clarification and guidance, and defers critical decisions to humans” Decides what matters; AI proposes and asks
AWS says both approaches have “produced suboptimal results in terms of velocity and software quality that AI-DLC aims to address”. The third column is this site’s summary, not AWS’s wording.

Questions about AI-driven development.

How is AI-driven development different from vibe coding?

No source contrasts them, so this is this site’s reading: "AI-driven" says who leads, and vibe coding says whether anyone reads. A team can be AI-driven and disciplined, as in AWS’s AI-DLC, where AI "defers critical decisions to humans", or AI-driven and careless. The word alone does not tell a CTO which, so ask what checks the output.

Is AI-driven development the same as AI-DLC?

No. AI-driven development is a generic phrase with no owner. AI-DLC is one named methodology, the AI-Driven Development Lifecycle that Raja SP introduced at AWS on 31 July 2025, and it is the phrase’s strongest anchor. Elsewhere the phrase turns up mostly in vendor and agency marketing, and our research found no analyst firm using it as a formal category.

How is AI-driven development different from AI-assisted and spec-driven development?

AWS describes AI-assisted development as AI that "enhances specific tasks", so a human leads and AI helps; AI-driven puts AI in the lead. Spec-driven development names the artifact that leads, the spec, while AI-driven names the actor (this site’s reading). The terms often get conflated, and a team can be both.

Who coined AI-driven development?

No one is credited with coining it, and there is no canonical definition. Wikipedia has no article for it (checked via its API on 10 October 2026). The named uses are AWS’s AI-Driven Development Lifecycle of 31 July 2025 and McKinsey’s "AI-driven software development" in its article of 3 November 2025.
